Setup to this story: My husband and I had explained to the 5 year old how you can use a magnifying glass to focus a beam of light so intense you can start a fire if needed. My mom was wathcing they boys about a week after this and she realted this story to us:
"OK, so I am in the living room listening to the conversation between the 5 and 3 yr old grandsons in their bedroom" .... 5 year old talking to 3 year old, 'So you see this magnifying glass? If you point it to the rays of the sun, they all come together to form a point and heat builds up so you can start a fire!' .... 3 year old's response 'OK, LET'S DO IT!!!!'
....Grandma wished us luck with these two and warned us about possibly locking up the science gear. I think I prefer the science gear to have open access, don't want to discourage valid uses, just will have to have a serious talk about the proper outdoor firepit location and required adult supervision of fire with the 5 year old.
