Engineer Mom, Define Fashion?

2/18/2013

Setup:  One of the villains in Wild Kratts is Donita, a fashion designer who tries to make accessories out of
animals.
6 Year Old: Mom, what is ‘fashion’?
Me: Ummm, I don’t know how to
describe it.  Some people think that the way clothes look is important and classify certain things as ‘fashion’ based on how they look.  I like to pick clothes by how they function, if they keep you comfortable I think that is more important.
6 year Old: I would rather pick clothes so they function too.  Like if you wear a black shirt, it will help you absorb heat from the sun.
Me: Exactly!

6 Year Old said in math today in his center he could make a graph of anything he liked, as long as there were less than 10 of each object, and there were a unique number of each object. He chose to make a ninja’s weapons graph. His ninja has 4 nunchucks, 3 shields, 2 swords, and 1 slingshot. I sure hope that graph drawing makes it home from school sometime, if not I may have him recreate it

4 Year Old: Mom can you make the rectangle chicken nuggets (aka fish sticks) for dinner tonight?
Me: I am out of the rectangle ones, but I have circle ones (actual chicken nuggets)
4 Year Old: No mom, you have OVAL ones, they are not circles.
Me: You are correct; they are ovals, not circles. Do you want oval chicken nuggets and noodles?
4 Year Old: Yes, please.
The 4 year old caught the technically correct bug from his brother.

Star Wars Monopoly Math

I was beaten by the 6 year old at Star Wars Monopoly this morning. The 750 republic credits I had to pay him for landing on his property with a Starport (hotel), put me in a unrecoverable hole. The kid likes to buy Colonies and Starports, without worry of holding enough funds for later, his strategy paid off. Although we practiced a lot of important math skills by playing the game:  counting addition with rolling the dice, making change for large-bill republic credits… good times.
